Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. She was only a young child when her father, who was the carnival barker, passed away. Her mother had to work in jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was raised in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts in which she went to high school. But she only stayed in school for two years before leaving to pursue her acting profession. Her journey was not without obstacles. the path she chose to pursue. In New York she was hired to pose for photos for a magazine about crime, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. When she was employed as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. The city of Boston was in which she was employed during the night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time as an usherette. She was a drama student in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
